The Gardiner Foundation Board has toured dairy farms across Gippsland this week, meeting directly with farmers and industry leaders to hear firsthand about the opportunities, challenges and innovation shaping Victoria’s dairy industry.
The visit included a mix of farming operations, from pasture-based systems through to advanced robotic milking technology, reflecting the diversity and evolution of modern dairy farming in regional Victoria.
Among the farms visited was the Dumbalk North operation of Damien and Trudy Murphy, where Board members saw DeLaval robotic milking technology in action and discussed the role innovation is playing in improving farm productivity and workforce flexibility. Damien is a Gardiner-supported Nuffield Scholar and part of the Elevate Dairy innovation program.
The Board also visited Maree Dennan at Leongatha South, whose family’s connection to Gardiner spans generations, with daughter Sage receiving a 2026 Gardiner Tertiary Scholarship as she pursues studies toward veterinary medicine.
At Fish Creek, Graeme and Gillian Nicoll shared insights into sustainability, resilience and long-term industry leadership. Graeme is a former Dairy Australia Director and current Chair of the ADIC Sustainability Framework, while Gillian has extensive experience in natural resource management and agricultural extension.
The tour also included a visit to Jelbart Dairy, where Tim Jelbart discussed large-scale dairy operations, genomics and industry innovation, including his leadership of the national ImProving Herds project supported by Gardiner and Dairy Australia.
Gardiner CEO Allan Cameron said visits such as these were an important way for the Board to remain connected to the people and communities at the centre of Gardiner’s work.
“Spending time on farm and hearing directly from dairy farmers provides valuable insight into the realities of the industry and the opportunities ahead,” Mr Cameron said.
“These conversations reinforce the importance of continued investment in innovation, leadership and people to support thriving regional dairy communities.”
