In the small dairy community of South Purrumbete, sport has always been more than a game. For Becky McCann, it represents connection, belonging, and the heartbeat of rural life.
“Sport is such an important part of any rural community. These ovals and recreation reserves matter because I want my kids and other kids to have the same opportunities I had, seeing community and being part of it.”
After years of decline, the South Purrumbete Recreation Reserve sat unused for more than two decades. But in 2023, it came back to life. Backed by a $4,870 Gardiner Foundation Community Grant, locals restored the reserve’s essential infrastructure, including electrical upgrades that helped the committee secure further funding and attract new sporting activity.
“The Gardiner grant allowed us to install the electrical infrastructure, which was a really important piece of the puzzle,” Becky said. “It took the load off and helped us value add to attract more support. We’re so grateful.”
The return of sport marked an emotional milestone for the town, with families and former players gathering to celebrate the first games held on the oval in 24 years.
“It was a really emotional day,” Becky said. “I grew up here, watching my dad and family play. Seeing people back on the ground, reminiscing and seeing the potential for the future — it was so exciting.”
Today, the reserve is thriving once again, with the launch of the district’s first girls’ cricket team a proud sign of what community effort and small grants can achieve.
“It’s about creating opportunities for the next generation and keeping our community strong,” Becky said.
